Funny Poems

Title: The Kingfisher Book of Funny Poems
Publisher: Kingfisher, NY, NY
Selected by: Roger McGough

My face lit up when I first opened the package containing this book. I laughed and giggled as I read the first 80 pages. In fact, I couldn't put it down for an hour!

The book Funny Poems is jam-packed with silly poems from some of our favorite authors such as Shel Silverstein, Allan Ahlberg and Mervyn Peake. Some of these poems are silly, some are sad and some are just plane weird! One of my favorite poems is Vegetarians by Roger McGough. Here's part of it:

Don't tell me it doesn't hurt
when peas are ripped from their overcoats,
The hide flayed of sprouts,
Cabbage shredded, onions beheaded.
Throw in the towel and lay down the hoe.
Mow no more. Let my people go!

In conclusion, this book is great for all ages. Whether the topic is report cards, picking teams or the color of your dreams, this book has poems about everything from leadership to fame. The illustrations by Caroline Holden will make you laugh, too. They're outstanding. Be sure to check out her characters' funny hairdos. .I hope you enjoy this collection as much as I did.
