When Hippolyta arrives in Troy, she gives Podarces to the king but gets into an argument with him. This results in her being condemned to die. Just before she is to die, her unknown younger brother, Tithonus "rescues" her.
What follows is a suspenselful tale straight from Greek mythology.
On a scale of 1-10, I would give this book a 9. It was very vivid and emotional, and I could always sense Hippolyta's inner struggles. I reccomend this book to ages 10 to 14. There were some things little kids wouldn't understand about women and men, but older kids wouldn't have any trouble with these themes.
You should be fairly familiar with Greek myths before reading this book, though the gods and goddesses are explained. Jane Yolen is an excellent author and writes fantasy very well. Read Hippolyta and the Curse of the Amazons if you love Greek myths and girl power! (July, 2002)
