Aug. 24, 2005: Be a Social Problem Detective

Activities:
1. Make a poster with five
suggestions for making your classroom and school a place where everyone
feels safe and happy.
2. Keep a "Helping Others"
journal. Write down what you do each day to help others in your class
or school. Encourage friends to keep journals as well. Compare your activities.
3. Look at the comics pages
for a situation in which someone has a social problem. Write several sentences
telling what you would do to help the character. Then find an example
of someone who is helping a friend or classmate. Write several sentences
describing how the comics character is being helpful.
4. Make a "Social Problems
and Solutions" list. Draw a line down the center of a piece of paper.
Label the first column "When students can help." Label the second
column "When a teacher or principal can help." In the first
column, list school situations you¹ve experienced where a student
can make the situation better. In the second column, list situations where
you think you should ask for help from a teacher. Discuss your lists with
friends.
5. Write a paragraph about a friend who is a good social role model. Describe the different ways your friend has helped others in your class or school. Explain why you think your friend does so much to help others.
