Feb. 3, 2010: Let the Games Begin

The Mini Page is a syndicated, four-page tabloid written for young children found each Wednesday in The Denver Post. This issue of The Mini Page is available through the eEdition Archive to registered eEdition subscribers. Click here to learn about subscribing to the eEdition at no cost to you (for Colorado teachers).

Activities:

1. Paste newspaper words and pictures on a piece of paper to make a Winter Olympics poster.

2. Ask friends about the Olympic sports in today's Mini Page. Which ones have they tried? Which ones would they like to try?

3. With a friend, circle newspaper ads in red for equipment that athletes use to train, and in blue, equipment they use in their sports.

4. Divide a circle into three sections. In the sections, write the sports that use (a) blades, (b) runners and (c) skis.

5. Research a combined Olympic event. Write about why the two elements were selected for that combination.

Mini Page activities meet many state and national educational standards. Each week we identify standards that relate to The Mini Page content and offer activities that will help your students reach them. This week's standard:

  • Students understand that physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and social interaction. (Physical Education)
