Activities:

1. Select a person or event you think should have its own holiday. Make a poster for the holiday.

2. Write five celebrations from the calendar on a piece of paper. Write the newspaper section in which you would find stories about that celebration.

3. Which of the news events from 2009 were about (a) political figures, (b) the natural world, (c) the arts, and (d) science?

4. Select five people featured in the newspaper. Find a calendar celebration they would like. Explain your choices.

5. Use resources and the Internet to learn more about a person or event on the calendar. Write a paragraph about what you find.

Mini Page activities meet many state and national educational standards. Each week we identify standards that relate to The Mini Page content and offer activities that will help your students reach them. This week's standard:

  • Students understand people and events honored in commemorative holidays. (History)
