June 23, 2010: Building With Sand

The Mini Page is a syndicated, four-page tabloid written for young children found each Wednesday in The Denver Post. This issue of The Mini Page is available through the eEdition Archive to registered eEdition subscribers. Activities:

1. Divide a piece of paper into four sections. With a friend, design a sand sculpture for each section: a birthday, July 4th, Thanksgiving and St. Patrick’s Day.

2. Circle five pictures in the newspaper that would make good sand sculpture ideas.

3. Find five tools in the newspaper that you could use to make a sand sculpture.

4. How are these important for sand sculptures: (a) shovels, (b) water, (c) brushes, and (d) river banks.

5. Use the Internet to learn about other sculpturing materials, such as wood or marble. Write a paragraph comparing another material to sand sculpture.

Mini Page activities meet many state and national educational standards. Each week we identify standards that relate to The Mini Page content and offer activities that will help your students reach them. This week's standard:

  • Students understand that the visual arts have specific relationships to various cultures. (Art)
