Jan. 12, 2011: Going Bananas

The Mini Page is a syndicated, four-page tabloid written for young children found each Wednesday in The Denver Post. This issue of The Mini Page is available through the eEdition Archive to registered eEdition subscribers. Activities:

1. Draw a banana in the middle of a piece of paper. Paste newspaper pictures of different foods that could be made with bananas around your drawing.

2. Do a banana survey. Ask different people to name their favorite banana baked dessert, cold dessert, drink and sandwich.

3. Find fruits in the newspaper that are like bananas in some way. Explain how they are similar.

4. How are these important to bananas: (a) thick skin, (b) “daughter” shoots, (c) radishes, and (d) the United Fruit company?

5. Use the Internet to learn about the many uses for different parts of the banana plant. Write about what you learn.

Mini Page activities meet many state and national educational standards. Each week we identify standards that relate to The Mini Page content and offer activities that will help your students reach them. This week's standard:

  • Students understand food science, dietetics and nutrition practices. (Family & Consumer Science)
