Jan. 4, 2012: Election Ahead!

The Mini Page is a syndicated, four-page tabloid written for young children found each Wednesday in The Denver Post. This issue of The Mini Page is available through the eEdition Archive to registered eEdition subscribers. Click here to learn about subscribing to the eEdition at no cost to you (for Colorado teachers).

Activities:

1. Design a campaign button for a candidate.

2. With friends, list five things you would like the next president to do for children.

3. List the candidates on a piece of paper. For one week, track the number of stories about each of the candidates in the newspaper.

4. Which candidates have been (a) businessmen, (b) governors, (c) U.S. representatives, and (d) attorneys?

5. Create a chart with candidate names down the left side. Label columns across the top: jobs, immigration, defense. Use the newspaper to find comments by candidates to put in the columns. Compare the comments.

Mini Page activities meet many state and national educational standards. Each week we identify standards that relate to The Mini Page content and offer activities that will help your students reach them. This week's standard:

  • Students identify key ideals of the United States’ democratic republican form of government. (Social Studies: Civic Ideals and Practices)
